Cecil Gene Mathews Jr., affectionately known as "Bubba," passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, in Tyler on August 3, 2024, at the age of 72. He was born on January 6, 1952, in Overton, Texas, to Cecil Gene Mathews Sr. and Vivian Lucille Browning Mathews. Gene was a lifelong resident of the Overton community.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Gene's life will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Overton Cemetery.
Gene was a dedicated lab tech for many years and was most often seen in scrubs or overalls wherever he went. He was married to the love of his life, the late Donna "Amber" Mathews. A loving and devoted family man, he took great pride in raising his granddaughter Jayme as his own and cherished her dearly. He will be remembered for his fiery spirit and quick wit, always bringing laughter and joy to those around him.
Gene is survived by his daughter, Jayme Marshburn, her husband Logan, and their child Juliana of Tyler; his sister, Diane Rowe, and her husband Ray of Overton; his sister, Wendy Williams of Kilgore; granddaughters, Ayzha Richardson and her husband Travis of Longview, and Sierra McCoy of Tyler; his aunt, Ann Browning of Longview; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Donna, his brother Richard "Ric" Mathews, and his brother-in-law Bobby Williams.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the Hospice of Tyler for the compassionate care he received in his final days. Special dedicated thanks to his dialysis nurse Jodie Lepley.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home of Overton.
Bubba's vibrant presence and warm heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
