TROUP - We said goodbye for a little while to our precious loving Husband, Daddy and Pappy until we meet again on the Golden Shores. Mr. Garrett passed away Sunday, September 12, 2021, in UT Health hospital Tyler, TX. He was born September 10, 1950, in Jacksonville, TX to the late James and Jean Garrett. He lived in Troup all of his life.
Funeral services for David Garrett, age 71, Troup will be 10:00 am, Thursday, September 16, 2021, at Cottle Funeral Home, Troup, with Reverend Wes Bynum officiating. Burial will follow at Henry's Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
He enjoyed singing and worshiping as a member of Green Acres Baptist Church, Tyler, TX. He served on the board with the Wright City Water Supply Corporation. He was an active member of the American Petroleum Institute for several years. He began working in the oilfield his senior year in high school in 1968, as a roughneck, with Gibson Drilling Company. He worked with Hunt Oil Company as a pumper and in sales. He then became a warehouse supervisor with East Texas Salt Water Disposal and later, went into business with his dad, owning and operating J-Gar Well Service. He thoroughly enjoyed large cookouts for oilfield colleagues and friends at various locations. As he continued to work in the oilfield, he became a salesman with Boots & Coots/Halliburton where he retired in 2015, with 47 years in the oilfield. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling, especially to the beach, to watch the dolphins from his balcony. He also enjoyed fishing at the family lake with his son, grandson, and granddaughters. He loved spending time with his family and watching them in their sports and activities.
He married his wife of 52 years, Mary Tennison, on July 18, 1969, in Hurst, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Jean Allen Garrett, brother James Ray Garrett, father and mother-in-law Floyd "Buck" and Valaska "Ducky'' Tennison, and sister-in-law B.R.Tennison.
Survivors include his wife Mary Garrett, daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Jeremiah Redding; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Gaylynn Garrett; granddaughters, Victoria and Brianna Redding, Ashlyn and Cheyenna Garrett; grandson, Jake David Garrett; numerous other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Morris, Virgil Redding, Bill Clem, Jackie Nations, Pete Kirkland, and Monte Madsen.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Melvin Nelson, Bobby Colston, Angel Rios, and Sherman Clem.
