Donald Rexford "Rex" Ferrell

Donald Rexford “Rex” Ferrell, 87, of Jacksonville, Texas, went to be with the Lord, on July 12, 2022, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Graveside services for Rex will be 10:00 am, Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Union Grove Cemetery, Troup with Randy Ferrell officiating.

Rex was born in Van, Texas to Leonard E. and Bessie Lou Shinn Ferrell, on June 26, 1935. He worked from the age of 18 for Hunt Oil Company, where he worked until retirement. After retirement he enjoyed fishing, golfing where his side bets substantially supplemented his income, and living in Reese, Texas. He loved birds, building many birdhouses and persistently on a quest to build the perfect Martin House.

At Hunt Oil Company, Rex started as a derrick man and worked as a roust- about, moving on to working as a switcher and then gang pusher. Rex was a loved and respected employee of Hunt Oil. Rex loved all types of music and attended an “Eagles” concert on his 50th wedding anniversary. Attending concerts was a favorite for him.

He enjoyed local art, especially of birds and nature. As a young man, he had considered becoming an artist and had attended art classes. One of his hobbies was garage sales, where he had a list ready and a focus to go with it. He fished often and would give neighbors fresh fish often, along with plums and asparagus.

Rex enjoyed playing dominoes with his grandkids and even enjoyed learning frisbee golf. He was a fierce “washers” competitor. His sense of humor was a constant companion, even up to his last days. Many enjoyed this and were on the receiving end of his humor. He was always ready for a quick wit and a good one- liner.

Rex enjoyed hard work, and he and his wife, Joyce, worked side by side. He was a lover of chocolate, James Bond, Keystone Ice (It’s made by Coors!!), and chewing tobacco. He was a devoted husband and madly in love with his wife Joyce until his last breath (63 years of marriage).  He would often proclaim he was married to the most beautiful woman and carried a picture to prove it. He was a strong family man and neighbor.

Rex is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Bessie Ferrell, wife, Joyce Athene Womack, brother, Charles Harris Ferrell, and great-grandson, Connor James Sides.

Rex is survived by his children Randy Ferrell and wife Lorna of Oklahoma City, OK, Pam Sides and husband Mike of Porter, TX, Laura Ferrell and Peter Simonson of Albuquerque, NM, and David Ferrell and wife Linda of Georgetown, TX; sister, Bettye Lynn Ledbetter; grandchildren, Ryan Sides and wife Victoria, Kate Ferrell Dickerson and husband, Taylor, Jodi Ferrell, Emily Ferrell, Samuel Burnett, Russell Ferrell and wife Samantha, Will Ferrell, Lauren Ferrell, Nicole Ferrell, and Marissa Ferrell; great-grandchildren, Madison Sides, Nora Dickerson, Quinn Dickerson, and Elliot Duffina.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
