Douglas Eugene Moore
January 25, 1954 – May 21, 2025
Douglas Eugene Moore, 71, of Fairfield, Texas, passed away on May 21, 2025. He was born on January 25, 1954, in Abilene, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 31st, 2025, at Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home in Overton, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the same location. Interment will immediately follow the service.
Doug’s life was filled with music, ministry, and joy. He loved singing above all and could play any instrument he picked up, despite never taking a lesson or reading music easily. He learned to play by ear at a young age and became a wonderful singer, performing with many gospel groups through the years, the last one being Humble Hands. Doug loved traveling and singing with his friends, using his gifts to minister the gospel.
He wrote at least 60 beautiful songs over the years and served faithfully as a minister and pastor in Smithville, Texas, for many years. Doug was also a talented actor and playwright. One of his most impactful portrayals was of the Apostle Paul in prison. He brought this to life in churches across the region, dressing in a robe, shackles, and chains, and powerfully reciting the entire book of 2 Timothy word for word, in a voice he imagined as Paul’s.
Doug also brought joy through his playful impersonations. Known as “Little Elvis” in Canton and beyond, he performed at community events with uncanny talent, though he refused to wear the costume. He remained “Little Elvis” in the hearts of many. At various jobs and among family, he was also affectionately nicknamed “Papa Smurf.”
He loved singing at opry's across Texas, sharing Elvis songs and Country Gospel with all who would listen. His legacy of laughter, love, music, and ministry lives on in the many lives he touched.
He enjoyed fishing , camping , forty two and chess . He also loved playing golf very much !!
He was The Master at homemade pizza and enjoyed making it for everyone, and enjoyed the compliments that came with it .
He passed down his recipe to his children and grandchildren, but they still say they just can’t make it taste like his. There was love in the preparation.
He was famous for his corny jokes that he would make up randomly.
He probably could have made a lot of money as a stand up comedian. All of the kids that knew him loved his Donald Duck voice, especially his sneezes.
He graduated from Garland High School and was always a proud Garland Owl!! Anyone who knew him knew he was a Dallas Cowboys fan through and through, even when they weren’t doing their best and he fussed about that all of the time while watching the games!
Also, a huge Texas Longhorns forever fan.
Rockie Balboa was his hero and he watched every one of the movies over and over. He had fun quoting lines from them a lot .
He loved his westerns and country Family reunions.
The love Doug had for his children and his grandchildren was amazing . He was Poppy to not only his grandchildren but to all of the friends that came along and took them as his own.
He adored his friends and loved playing games on his phone with several of them.
He has friends from school days that he is still very close to, and loves them all like brothers.
“Oh, Guy” was a line he was known for saying. I can’t help but wonder if he said that as he greeted those he loves in Heaven.
Doug is survived by his loving mother, Carol Moore Garner, and his sister Donna Ketchum and her husband Alan. He is also survived by the love of his life, Laverne Moore.
Doug was a devoted father to his children: Sonja Robinson and husband Stephen, Douglas Brian Moore and wife Stephanie, Jennifer Moore and husband Chad, Natalie Easter and husband Alex, Bridget Clarkson and husband Billy, Adrian Moore and wife Miranda, Shelley Reid and husband Chris, and Aaron Moore and wife Erin.
He was a proud grandfather to 32 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to 14 great-grandchildren. Doug also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, David D. Moore, and his brother, David Wayne Moore.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton, Texas.
