Eugene Harold Nelson was born in Avoca, Iowa on February 28, 1936 and moved with his family to Texas at a young age. He graduated from Arp High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed baseball and became an avid golfer for almost his entire life.
He attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Arp, Texas and later First United Methodist in Henderson, Texas. He was a welder for many years working in East Texas as well as overseas.
Nelson had two daughters, Gina Terry and her husband Kenneth of White Oak, and Stacy Godwin and her husband John of Rowlett. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Tyler Terry and his wife Ashley, Trent Terry, Ashley Wyatt and her husband Paul, Morgan Gent and her husband CJ, Courtney Godwin; thirteen great-grandchildren, his brother Jimmy Nelson and his wife Loneta of New London; and many other beloved relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Loma Tomlinson Nelson Moose and second wife Shirl Townley Nelson of Henderson whom he shared stepchildren, Joey Townley and wife Aleesa and Christy Staneart, and husband Kenneth. Five step-grandchildren, Addison Staneart, Aleigh Townley, Jake Staneart, and his wife Jordan, Trent Staneart, and Kylie Carroll, and three step-great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by his Step Grandson Max Townley.
He died on June 28, 2023, in White Oak. Visitation will be a Cottle Pearson Funeral Home in Overton, Texas on July 15 beginning at 9 am followed by interment at 10:30 am at Bradford Cemetery in Troup
