Gene "Slim" Shuttlesworth

Samuel Eugene “Slim” Shuttlesworth of Troup, Texas fell asleep peacefully and arrived in the presence of the Lord on April 28, 2024. Gene was born on January 28, 1927, and raised in the East Texas area.

He graduated from Carlisle High School and went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Kadashan Bay. Upon leaving the service he married the love of his life, Billye Jeanne Toole in 1951. They celebrated 73 years of marriage on February 15, 2024. Gene worked in the oilfield industry his entire life from roughneck to tool pusher supporting his family through many long hours and hard work. His early years he enjoyed hunting and fishing and later found pleasure in gardening and woodwork. He and Billye traveled yearly to the ship reunions the Kadashan crew held throughout the United States. He was of the Christian faith and his last words were “thank you Jesus.”

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Billye Jeanne, daughters, Lynda Born of Tyler, Texas, and Brenda (Katie) Staples of Mansfield, Texas, grandsons, Zachary of Las Vegas, Nevada and Noah and wife Merry Jett of Arlington, Texas. Also, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents Tim and Miriam Shuttlesworth, brother David and sister Dorothy, Sons-in-law Jerry Born and David Staples.

Visitation is 1 p.m., with funeral following at Cottle Funeral Home at 2 p.m., 105 E. Bradford, Troup, Texas. Graveside at Union Grove Cemetery.
