Jackie Roberson Obituary

Jackie Lloyd “Jack” Roberson, of Longview, Texas, passed away on July 1, 2025, in Longview, Texas. He was born on June 23, 1944, in San Diego, California, to the late Billy Jack and Dorothy Louise Perkins Roberson.

Funeral services for Jackie L. Roberson will be Monday, July 7, 2025 at 11 am at Cottle Pearson Funeral Home, 905 S Commerce Street, Overton, Texas. Visitation for family and friends will be one hour prior to service at 10 am. Burial will follow immediately after services at Overton City Cemetery, Overton, Texas.

Soon after Jackie was born, and after his father was discharged from the Marine Corps, the family moved from California back to Texas. Jackie attended schools in Gladewater, Wilmer-Hutchins, Wills Point, Nacogdoches, and Donna. In 1962, Jackie graduated from Donna High School in Donna, Texas. One of his finest accomplishments in high school was being a member of the state AA football championship team in Donna during his senior year in 1961. This achievement is particularly special because the Donna Redskins remain the only football team in the 105-year history of UIL football to win a state championship from the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The team’s success was even more remarkable given that it was comprised of only 18 players. Jackie and several other teammates also qualified to participate in the state basketball tournament.

Jackie was awarded a full football scholarship to the University of Texas upon graduation from high school. After leaving the University of Texas, he continued his playing career at Stephen F. Austin State University.

After working for many years in Longview and various other locations in Texas, Jackie moved to Kentucky, where he met Judy Lain. The two were married, and after Judy’s passing in 2020, Jackie moved back to Texas to be closer to family.

Jackie Roberson, a former collegiate athlete and dedicated worker, was known for his love of sports, strong family ties, and perseverance through life’s challenges. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include daughter Stacy Adams and husband Rob of Longview; son Scott Simcox and wife Jessica of Longview; daughter Amy Burke; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Tommy Roberson and wife Tricia of Mart, Texas; sister Lisa Strate and husband Tom of Lafayette, Louisiana; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jackie was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Louise Perkins Roberson and Billy Jack Roberson, and his infant daughter, Jackie Larue Roberson.

To many he was known as Jackie; however, in his later years, he was lovingly called “Jack” and “PaPa Jack.”

Arrangements are under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton, Texas.
