James Vernon Florence

James Vernon Florence of Liberty City, Texas passed away peacefully in his home on February 10, 2022 at the age of 85.

Vernon was born in Overton, Texas to Wallace and Fay Florence on September 24, 1936. After graduating from Overton High School, Vernon served his country in the Navy from 1954 to 1958. He married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Delores (PeeWee) Burton on May 21, 1956.

A service to celebrate Vernon’s life will be held on Friday, February 18, 2022 at 10 AM at Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton. The service will be officiated by son-in-law, Frank Harber. Visitation will follow immediately after the service. 

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Dan; his sisters Fay, Hazel, Maryett, Georgia, Lila Jane; and his great-granddaughter Brooklynn.

Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Delores; children: Bud (Sam) and wife Karen, James (Jay) and wife Melissa, Rebecca (Becky) and husband Frank; nine grandchildren: Preston, Brandon, Victoria, Joshua, Belle, Graham, Gabrielle, Hunter, Hannah; and three great-grandchildren: Khloe, Hudson, Athena; brother Walter (Buster) Florence, sister Ruby Liles and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vernon was a Mason and a devoted family man. He was a faithful husband, loving father, a fun grandfather affectionately known as Pepaw, and a cherished son, brother, and uncle. His memory shall live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
