Joyce E. Priddy, 90, of Gladewater, Texas, formerly an Overton resident, went to be with the Lord on December 28th, 2022, in Longview, Texas.
Joyce was born January 29th, 1932, to Bill and Lucile Hammons at their country home between Alto and Crockett, Texas. The family friend's doctor that was a neighbor a few doors down delivered her. Joyce's most vivid childhood memories were spent playing with her cousin whom lived a couple of houses down and riding her horse. Her father Bill, nicknamed her "nugget" because she was "worth her weight in gold". As a child, most summers were spent working the fields starting at 5-6 years old. She would gather produce from the farm, fish by the creek, and hunt hogs with her dad to put food on the table. She had two younger brothers growing up Pete and Dick Hammons. Pete was 5 years old when she left home for college.
Joyce began her career in Business College where she attended for 1 year and received a degree in Business. Her first job was right out of Business School, American Coal Company. She did not serve in the military but her husband, Walter did. He was in the Coast Guard and was stationed in North Carolina. She met her husband as he was asking for directions to the Post Office in town. They were married when she was 25 and he was 35 years old in her boss's living room.
Her career continued as a stay-at-home mom while raising their two children, and then she worked for Pope and Turners Furniture store in Overton, Texas for 28 years as a secretary, where she retired. Joyce loved going to Florida and Galveston beaches for summer vacations with her family.
She was a beautiful soul who loved life, family, and friends. She was a loving wife, mom, sister, grandma (Nanny), great-grandma, aunt, and friend. She never met a stranger.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Walter L. Priddy, II, brother, Pete Hammons, and a sister-in-law, Sue Hammons.
She is survived by one brother, Dick Hammons, and sister-in-law, Dolores Hammons of Houston County, TX; son, Walter L. Priddy, 111, and wife Selena of Longview, TX, daughter, Laura PhinnyLong of Gladewater, TX; grandchildren, Megan Young, her husband Daniel Young and Zachary Phinny, great-grandchildren, Cullen Young, Ellie Grace Young and nieces, and nephews.
