Katie Mae Nichols, of New London, Texas, passed away on February 27, 2025, in Overton, Texas. She was born on July 11, 1932, in Rusk County, Texas, to the late Clyde and Ozell Lummus.
Visitation services for family and friends will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, 905 S Commerce Street in Overton, Texas.
In accordance with her family’s wishes, a private service will be held.
Katie, a devoted homemaker, was also known for her many talents and contributions to her community. Earlier in her life, she was a dedicated ambulance first responder in Overton, serving the Rusk County area with compassion and commitment, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Katie was also an avid quilter and loved spending time in her garden and working outside. In addition to her community service, she worked in the family oilfield business, where she could often be found driving trucks and heavy equipment. She was also deeply involved in running the family’s working farm, where she raised cattle, baled hay, and managed many other farm duties. Her hard work and determination were evident in everything she did.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her children: Shirley Nichols of Arp, Texas; Bobby Nichols, wife Lawanda of New London, Texas; Sammy Nichols of New London, Texas; Peggy Chandler, and Judy Carter, husband Kirk of Carlisle, Texas. Also survived by 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Katie Mae Nichols was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lee Nichols, one grandson, two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton, Texas.
